The Western Maryland Scenic Railroad

When you travel back through time on the Western Maryland Scenic Railroad, also known as Mountain Thunder, with the 1916 Baldwin 2-8-0 or the restored diesel engine, you’ll climb through the spectacular scenery of the Allegheny.

A narrator will be aboard to provide you with information about the scenery

history, and cultural along the route.

Regular scenic excursions depart at 11:30 AM from the Western Maryland Station in Cumberland, Maryland.  The station stands today as the last remaining building linked directly to Cumberland’s role as a major railroad center.    The train returns to the station at approximately 3:00 PM.  There will be a                                                                1 ½ hour layover in Frostburg where you may enjoy lunch, watch them turn the engine on a turntable, wander through the Frostburg shops by the Depot, investigate the shops and restaurants on Frostburg’s Main Street, and visit the Thrasher Carriage Museum. This was my favorite train trip.  We rode this train and the Potomac Eagle in                                           Romney, WV on the same weekend.

Walkerville Sourthern Railroad is the only other tourist train in Maryland.  Some museums you might

Like to see are the Baltimore Street Car Museum,  Chesapeake Beach Railways Museum.
