| Before they were known as The
Who, they were known as The Detours. The Detours were from Acton and
were growing in fame. It wasn't until February 1 at Pete Townshend's
house that they came up with the name: The Who.
At that time, the band's drummer was Doug Sandom. One night, Pete blew up at Doug and Doug quit the band. After that the band had interviewed many drummers: Including the 17-year-old John "Mitch" Mitchell (who later found fame playing in the Jimi Hendrix Experience). One night in Greenford, the band met Keith Moon while he was playing for his band, the beachcombers (a band very much like the United States' Beach Boys). Keith was unsatisfied with his band because they were perfectly contempt playing locally and not trying to become famous. Keith had heard that The Who was having some trouble finding drummers and asked them if he could have a shot. The Who said, "Can you play Road Runner?" (because they couldn't find anyone who could play it). Keith decided to try and during his performance (which he played correctly) he broke his bass drum pedal and his hi-hat. Unanimously, the band thought, "This is the fella'".
From then on the Who grew in fame in Britain and the rest of the U.K. It wasn't until the band released the album Tommy that they were known all over. Tommy was about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy and it was the first 'Rock Opera'. After the debut of the album, the band even made a movie, Tommy, in which lead singer Roger Daltrey played Tommy.
