When you are practicing, or competing in a meet, you should always wear a leotard. Leotards allow gymnasts to move freely when executing skills and routines.
| On bars, most gymnasts prefer to wear grips to protect their hands from getting large calluses, blisters, and "rips". Rips happen when calluses or blisters rip open and expose the deeper layers of skin. Grips are usually made up of a leather-like material with 2 holes for your middle and ring finger to go through, a dial, and a velcro of buckle strap for the wrist. Also to keep their wrist from becoming irritated, gymnasts wear wrist-bands around their wrists. However, some gymnasts choose not to wear grips. It all depends on what the gymnast prefers, and how they perform. | |

Although it is not as common anymore, gymnasts can wear special shoes to help prevent the from slipping and give them a better grip on beam and floor. Now, most gymnasts prefer to just practice and compete in their bare feet.
