The balance beam is a 4 inch wide 16 feet 3 inch long wooden beam that is covered in a leather-like material, that stands on metal legs that are about 4 feet tall.
The balance beam is the event that takes the most concentration. Originally, the balance beam was used to encourage good posture, coordination, and grace.
In the past, this event was used to demonstrate simple balances. Now, gymnasts perform difficult choreography, such as, turns, leaps, and jumps, as well as, difficult tumbling and acrobatic skills.
The floor exercise is performed on a square spring floor covered with a traditionally blue nylon carpet that has an area of 12m x 12m.
The floor is the root of gymnastics. It is the most artistic of the other 4 events, and it is the only event that is performed to music, which links the sport to dance.
The women's floor exercise is a  combination of acrobatics, tumbling, and dance. It includes leaps, turns, balances, and poses, and it's required that the gymnast uses the entire square without stepping put of bounds during their 1 minute and 10 second routine.

The balance beam, and the floor exercise are the 2 most graceful events that combine tumbling, acrobatics, and dance together to show balance and strength.
