Many people do not know what El Nino is, where it is, and what it has to do with our weather. El Nino is a warm ocean current in the Pacific Ocean. El Nino occurs every three to seven years on average., What allows this to occur? When trade winds weaken (winds that blow from northeast north of the equator and southeast south of the equator), the warm water flows east towards the United States is what allows this to happen. 

 

  The ocean current, El Nino, is along/lies along the Equator. El Nino is " the boy " in Spanish and is sometimes called " Christ Child " for  being discovered around Christmas time by a fisherman. El Nino also causes a decrease   
in fish population, do to the warming of the waters. There is heavier flooding in El Nino years. El Nino caused

 

 the 1993 Mississippi flood. El Nino also caused the 1995California floods. This warming of the waters can

 

 cause any kind of weather as seen in the photographs on this page. This can also affect places that are thousands of miles away from it.
