To prevent tooth decay, you need to know what it looks like and how it is started in order to avoid it.  In short, this is how tooth decay happens.  Germs in you mouth love to eat.  They will eat any small amount of food you leave in your mouth, especially processed or refined foods.  They will eat constantly, they don't need oxygen to survive, and very little food will satisfy millions of germs.  Now, like any living organisms, they need to excrete their waste, and they do this in our mouths.

This excretion is the real cause of tooth decay, because it is acidic and will harm us.  Depending on where it is done, it will penetrate either the skin of the mouth casing gum disease, or the enamel of the tooth causing tooth decay.

Prevention of tooth decay is easy, in theory.  All that must be done is regular, careful brushing and cleaning of the teeth, and a better diet of less sugary and regined foods.  All natural and organic foods are best, lots of fruit and vegetables.

However, most people find eating healthy food too hard to stick to.  If you aren't able to eat food that's good for your teeth, then the real key is cleaning right.  The next section will talk about the right way to brush and use your tools, so you need to know what tools to have to do a good job.  To really clean right, you need to at least have the basics: desire, time, hands, a toothbrush, and toothpaste.

The enamel around the teeth is the hardest substance in the whole body, but the bacteria can still erode it.

Normal permanent teeth will fit neatly together.

This bacteria is shown beneath a microscope.
