In 1938 World War 2 began, and so did the story. A lady named Maria was a "nun-in-training" in the country of Austria.  To get her mind off of things, she was sent to be a nanny with a family whose mother had passed away.  But this was not any old family during the 1930's.  There was seven children!  The children played nasty tricks on Maria at the beginning of her stay.  As days passed, the family realized that Maria was different from their other nannies - she was very musical.  Since their mother had passed away, the children forgot about all the fun and happiness that used to be present in their lives.  This included music and singing.  Maria taught the children how to sing again, and happiness began to get their father, an extremely strict and stubborn man, to sing and play the guitar again for the children.

Eventually, Maria and Captain VonTrapp fall in love.

They get married at the Abby where Maria is a "nun-in-training."

After the wedding, everything seems perfect. But this is just where another adventure begins. They have to leave Austria and escape from Hitler's army. To avoid the mess of World War 2, the VonTrapp family starts a new life-up over the mountains and into peaceful lands.

The show was released on Broadway on November 16, 1959.

The music and lyrics were written by Richard Rogers and Oscar Hammerstein.
