The hit thing in Chicago in the late 1920's is jazz. When the city is taken under by this phenomenon.

Everybody loves a legend, but in the city of Chicago, there's only room for one. The story begins when nightclub sensation, Velma Kelly, kills her husband and lands a spot in the famous Murderess Row. Velma Kelley hires Chicago's best lawyer, Billy Flynn, and is quickly put back in the spotlight, only increasing her fame.

The tables are turned when Roxie Hart, who dreams of singing and dancing her way to stardom, murders her abusive lover and also lands a spot in Murderess Row. Velma Kelley's lawyer, Billy Flynn, recognizes a "made-for-tabloids" story and postpones Velma's case to take on Roxie's. Billy turns Roxie's case into top headlines- giving her a ticket to stardom. Since murder is a form of entertainment in Chicago, Roxie Hart becomes a star, much to Velma Kelley's disadvantage.

As Roxie fashions herself as "America's Sweetheart", Velma cooks up a few plots. The two women stop at nothing to outdo each other, to earn the spotlight, and to acquire fame - at all costs.

The play Chicago started on Broadway in the 1930's. The show was a huge hit. Ginger Rogers starred as Roxie. When it first came out, the play was actually called "Roxie Hart." It wasn't until a few years later that it was given the name "Chicago."

A few decades later the show's creator, Bob Fosse, tried to make it into a film. After many, many attempts he gave up. But several years later, he came up with a solution and tried to put "Chicago: The Movie" back on track. Unfortunately, Fosse passed away before he could explain the concept.

After, director Rob Marshall, a Pittsburgh native, was asked by Miramax Pictures to come in and talk about a movie version of Rent. (Marshall directed the movie version of "Annie" for Disney and received a Tony Award for "Cabaret" which was directed by Bob Fosse.) While at the "Rent" interview, Marshall proposed the concept for the movie version of Chicago. Soon after, the production was underway and turned out to be a huge success.
