Chicago, which won 6 Academy Awards in 2002, was based on the Broadway show which has the same name "Chicago". Grease was an adaptation of the Broadway show with the same name. Grease won the People Choice Award for Favorite Musical Motion Picture in 1979. West Side Story is a musical version of Romeo and Juliet based in New York City and won an unprecedented 10 Academy Awards in 1961. Moulin Rouge is based on the opera La Travita and takes place in 1900s Paris. Musicals not only combine music and dancing but are some of the most successful movies of all time. | ||

| Grease and West Side Story are older musicals. Grease was released in 1978. West Side Story was released in 1961 and set the standard for musicals. There were musicals before West Side Story but, they were, well not very convincing. So you have to thank Robert Wise for his amazing vision which was basically a grander version of the stage performance. Grease was what started the 80s musical craze which included Footloose, Flashdance, and Dirty Dancing. Grease and West Side Story have become some of the most beloved movies of all time. | ||
