The Labrador Retriever originates from a peninsula in North America containing the Canadian provinces of Newfoundland and Quebec.  Labradors were ideal dogs for working in the local fishing industries.  Water dogs of different sorts were trained to haul the cod nets ashore and retrieve items that went overboard and otherwise earn their keep.
The name Labrador Retriever seems to have been adopted by the British.  The Canadians had previously referred to the breed as St. John's water dogs.

The breed was first imported during World War 1 and became popular in the United States by the 1920's.  The American Kennel Club recognized Labrador Retrievers as a separate breed during that period.  Their popularity continued to soar.  The American Kennel Club's registration statistics reveal that the Labrador Retriever remains America's most registered breed.
