  Roberto Clemente Walker was born on August 18, 1934 in Barrio San Antonio in Carolina, Puerto Rico.  Roberto was the youngest of four children in the Clemente family.  As a kid, Roberto was a very good track and field player.  He won medals in the short distance races and javelin throw.  Even throughhe loved track and field his real passion was baseball.  Throughout his childhood, roberto always had a bat or ball in his hands.  Roberto Clemente went on to play amateur ball withy the Juncos AA club, and from there he went to play for the Santurace Crabbers in the Peurto Rican Winter League.  From there he signed with the Brooklyn Dodgers and was sent down to their farm league, the Montreal Royals.  The Pittsburgh Pirates got Robertoe in the first pick of the1954 draft.  Roberto played for the Pittsburgh Pirates for all eighteen of his major league career, from 1955 to 1972.  On November 14, 1964 Roberto married Vera Christina Zabala in Carolina, Peurto Rico.  They had three boys whose names were, Roberto Jr., Luis Roberto, and Roberto Enrique.  Roberto Jr. was six, Luis Roberto was five, and Roberto Enrique was only two years old when their father Roberto Clemente died.  Roberto Clemente died in a plane crash on New Years Eve, December 31, 1972.  The plane that he was in was taking medicine food, and clothing to the earthquake stricken country of Nicaragua.  Vera and many friends begged him not to go because of the bad weather, but Roberto was determined to help the earthquake victims.  The plane crashed off the coast of Peurto Rico and Roberto's body was never found.  A few months later Roberto Clemente was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1973.  In 1966 he was the National League MVP, won the World Series MVP in 1971, won four National League batting titles, twelve time all-star, won twelve gold gloves, hit 3,000 hits, and was the first hispanic player inducted into the Hall of Fame, and the second baseball player to have his picture on a U.S postage stamp.  Clemente is the all-time Pirate leader in games, at bats, hits, singles, and total bases stolen.
