Henry Aaron was born on February 5, 1934 in Mobile, Alabama. Hank was the third of eight children born in the Aaron household. Hank was born to Estella and Herbert Aaron. They lived in a poor black area of town, but shortly after Hank's birth, the Aaron family moved to a better area of town. In high school, Hank played both shortstopand third base and was already a great hitter. He dropped out of high school in 1952 to join the Indianappolis Clowns who were a Negro American League. Shortly after, he was sold to the Braves for 10,000 dollars. That summer Hank was the rookie of the year. He made his Major League debut on April 13, 1954. In 1955 Aaron moved to right field, where he played for most of is career and the position that he won three gold gloves. The most famous date of Aaron's was April 8, 1974. On this date he hit a 385 foot homerun to pass Babe Ruth's 714 career home run, which is still to this date the most homeruns ever hit in a Major League career. Hank Aaron is the only player to ever hit 20 or more homeruns in 20 consecutive seasons. The twenty-four time all-star won three consecutive gold gloves, MVP in 1957, and has more career battin titles than any other player including Babe Ruth. Throughout his career Hank Aaron complained about all of tyhe racist fans and frighting letters that were sent to him. He hired a secretary to sort through the thousands of nasty letters he recieved daily. Most letters were racist and some were even threats of killing Aaron. After recieving the letters Aaron thought twice about his racist remarks. Today Hammerin Hank is married, has five children, and is a corporate vice president of community relations and a member of TBS' board of directors. | ![]() |
