George Herman Ruth Jr. was born on February 6, 1895 in Baltimore, Maryland to Kate Schamberger and George Herman Ruth Sr. Out of eight children only two babies lived past infancy. Babe and his sister Mamie. As a kid Babe didn't have a happy childhood. At age seven Babes father sent him to St. Mary's Industrial School for Boys, which was a reformatory and orphanage. He was there for twelve years until age 19. During the twelve years at the reformatory, Babe rarely saw his parents, not even on holidays. Brother Matthias a teacher at St. Mary's, was Babes inspiration in life. He provided Ruth with support, guidance, and courage throughout his years at St. Mary's. Babes talent was recognizable at an early age. He played catcher until age 15 when hebecame a pitcher. At age 19 Babe was signed by the Baltimore Orioles. George got his nickname "Babe" from histeammates. Five months later Babe became amember of the Boston Red Sox. There he played the outfield and was a outstanding pitcher. In 1919 he broke Gabby Kroweth's homerun record of 29 in one year. In 1919 he was sold to the New York Yankees for 125,000 dollars. In 1920 he nearly doubled his old homerun record with 54 homeruns. He brought so many fans to the games that the Yankees soon had enough money to build a new stadium which was later nicknamed " The House That Babe Built." In October of 1914 he married to Claire Hodgson. In 1927 he again broke his old homerun record with 600 in one season. The Babe, The Great Bambino, and The Sultan of Swat were a few of his nicknames. His most amazing thing that he did was when he called a homerun in the 1932 World Series. Babe retired at the end of the 1935 season and in 1946 he was diognosed with throat cancer. He died on August 16, 1948 and the naext season his number (3) was retired. | ![]() |
