The Companion Dog

Differing coat lengths separate the two varieties pf this tine, courageous dog.  The smooth-coated form had a short, glossy coat, while the long-haired form has a significantly longer, slightly wavy coat.  The long-haired form is the result of crossings of Smooth-coated Chihuahuas with Yorkshire Terriers and Papillions.  Selective breeding has since taken place to ensure that in all other respects the two forms are indistinguishable.  

Origin: Mexico - 1800's

History: The name "Chihuahua" derives from the Mexican state name, where this dog may have originated.  It was first seen in the United States towards the end of the 19th century, before it was taken to Europe.  Most of the bloodlines today are descended from the original 50 dogs taken to the United States.
