Basketball was invented in December 1891 by Dr. James Naismith, a teacher at the YMCA International Training School in Massachusetts. He wanted to invent something that would give the students something to do during the winter physical education classes. He got two fruit baskets, nailed them to the balconies at each end of a gym, found a soccer ball and set out some rules that are the basic rules of the game today.
	Dr. James Naismith, as you know invented the game of basketball. He was born in Canada in 1861.
The first game of basketball was played in a basement in the building to the right. There was only one basket scored and a step ladder was used to retrieve the ball from the fruit basket.

	In the begining time of professional basketball, the court was set up with netting all around to seperate the players from the spectators. That is what basketball is sometimes called the "Caged Game".
Basketball was invented because students at the YMCA Training School in Spring Field, Massachusetts complained about the winter gym classes being boring. They wanted a new indoor game to play.
