There are two teams. Each team with five players on the court at a time. The team with the most points at the end of the game wins. A team scores points by shooting a basketball through a hoop.

A basketball is round, orange, and has a grainy texture. It's size is between twenty-nine and thirty inches. The ball is filled with air that's under pressure, so that it will bounce when dropped.
An NBA (professional) court is fifty feet wide and ninety-four feet long. In high school the court is usually eighty-four feet long.
The baskets are ten feet high from the floor, but youth leagues may use lower baskets. The basket has a rim which is eighteen inches across with a net hanging from it.

A field goal (made shot) that was shot behind the thee-point line is worth three points. A free-throw is worth one point. All other field goals are worth two points.
High school teams play four, eight-minute quarters. College teams play two, twenty-minute halves. NBA teams use four, twelve-minute quarters.

Some violations are traveling, out-of-bounds, and the over and back violation. Traveling is when you run or walk with the ball without dribbling. Out-of-bounds is when you step in a boundary line with the ball. Over and back is when you take the ball over the mid-court line, but then take it back to the other side.
There are three different types of fouls. A personal foul is to push, hit, hold, or trip other players by accident. An intentional foul is when you foul someone on purpose. A technical foul is when you get mad and take out your anger on someone else.
