Each belt has a special meaning and symbol, as well as an accompanying form.  Each colored belt is an important step to achieving a black belt.  Despite certain student's beliefs, there is no reason to quit after achieving a black belt; it is, rather, the beginning of the journey.  Check out some of the spiritual and applicable meanings below:

the student is pure without the knowledge of taekwondo
the sun is beginning to rise- the student begins his/her journey
the seed is beginning to see the sun- the student begins to understand the basics
the sapling is hidden among the taller pines and must fight upwards- student must spar
the tree is beginning to develop and grow- the student's technique is developing in power
coming to the mountain the path steepens- techniques become more difficult as student progresses
the tree reaches skyward for new heights- the student reaches upwards for black belt
the tree is firmly rooted in the earth- the student has mastered the basics
the sun is setting on the first phase- first "day" (colored belts) is ending
dawn of a new day; sun breaks through the darkness- student begins new phase: black
the sun has over come the darkness- mental and physical balance is set
