The Four Strokes

Although people have swum since ancient times, swimming strokes have been greatly refined in the past 100 years. Competitive swimming, most notably the modern Olympic Games, begun in Athens, Greece, in 1896 increased interest in strokes. Scientific strokes, analysis has helped produce more vared strokes, greater speeds, and a better understanding of propulsion through the water.
1. Freestyle- an on the stomach stroke. It involves a one arm pull, at a time, moving in a forward motion. The kick is similar with one foot kicking at a time. It is a very important stroke and vital to all swimmers, competitive and recreational.
2. Backstroke- an on the back pull and kick. Very similar to freestyle stroke only on the back.
3. Breaststroke- A frog like and pull. The pull lifts the body a little while pulling inward. The kick is exactly like that of a frog.
4. Butterfly- looked at as the hardest stroke. Although this is not true. Pull is to be in the shape of a butterfly. The kick is both feet together, dolphin like.
