| Although people
have swum since ancient times, swimming strokes have been greatly refined
in the past 100 years. Competitive swimming, most notably the modern
Olympic Games, begun in Athens, Greece, in 1896 increased interest in
strokes. Scientific strokes, analysis has helped produce more vared
strokes, greater speeds, and a better understanding of propulsion through
the water. |

| 1. Freestyle- an on the
stomach stroke. It involves a one arm pull, at a time, moving in a forward
motion. The kick is similar with one foot kicking at a time. It is a very
important stroke and vital to all swimmers, competitive and
recreational. |

| 2. Backstroke- an on the back
pull and kick. Very similar to freestyle stroke only on the back. |

| 3. Breaststroke- A frog like
and pull. The pull lifts the body a little while pulling inward. The kick
is exactly like that of a frog. |

| 4. Butterfly- looked at as
the hardest stroke. Although this is not true. Pull is to be in the shape
of a butterfly. The kick is both feet together, dolphin like. |
