The Masters

2003 Winner: Mike Weir

The 6th Hole At Augusta National.

The Masters is one of the toughest events on the PGA TOUR.  This event is played annually at Augusta National in Maine.  This is the one of the events that every player wants to win.  The winner receives the Green Jacket, and is an honor to win.  It was created by Bob Jones and Clifford Roberts in 1934.  It has been played in the first week of April ever since then, with the exception of the early 1940's.  It wasn't played then because of World War II.  Unlike most other events, the Masters is always played at the same course every year.

The British Open

2003 Winner:  Ben Curtis

The British Open is the oldest of the Major Tournaments and is known for it's champions and traditions.  In most places it is known as "The Open" or "The World Open", but in the U.S. it is known as the British Open.  Unlike the Masters, the British Open is never played on the same course 2 years in a row.  This year it will be played in Royal Troon Scotland.  Players from around the world to play at this event.  The first British Open was played at Prestwick in 1860.  Prestwick was a short, 12 hole course, unlike today's 19 hole course.  They stopped playeing there in 1925 because it was too short for golfers to play on, and it was only 12 holes.  Many people who win the British Open often go and become famous golfers.

The PGA Championship

Since it came into the TOUR 1916, the PGA Championship has become one of the premier golf events.  Each summer one of the nation's best facilities hosts this event.  This year it will be held at Whistling Straits, Kohler Wisconsin.  The winner of the PGA Championship wins the Rodman Wanamaker Trophy, named after the event's founder, Rodman Wanamaker.  In 1916, department store owner Rodman  Wanamaker had an idea and invited prominent golfers and leading industry representatives to the meeting.
