Derek Jeter
| Derek Jeter is the shortstop for the New York Yankees. Not only is he a terrific player, he is an inspiration to dream, set goals, and never quit. | |
Derek Jeter was born on June 26th, 1974 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He got made fun of quite a bit because of his race. His father is black and his mother is white. A lot of times, when he was only 5 or 6, salespeople would follow him around in toy stores just because of his skin color. Derek says he ignored people that were ignorant towards him. |
| Derek played many sports; baseball, basketball, and soccer but baseball was always his favorite. |

When he was little, Derek had to write out his goals every year. His parents made him do this because they wanted him to look forward to something in life, not because they were strict |
During high school, he kept up his grades and was never involved with drugs or alcohol.

Family is very important to Derek. They were always there to support him. Even when he was little and told his parents he wanted to be a baseball player they helped him to make that dream come true. He says it's always important to be around people who support you. |
| You can always do better. When Derek was injured, he'd watch tapes of his batting stance and kept making little adjustments. Even the littlest things can make a difference. |

Trying is key. If you never try anything, how can you accomplish anything. If you believe you can make a play, try. |
| Here is Derek hitting a home run against the White Sox." I am living proof that with hard work, you can make your dreams happen." says Derek. |

I hope you've learned something from Derek Jeter's life lessons. It's not his place on the Yankees that makes him my favorite player, it's how he got there.
