| The Pittsburgh Pirates football team was founded in 1933 by Art Rooney. He named the team after Pittsburgh's baseball team. The two franchises shared Forbes Field. After seven losing seasons Rooney renamed his team to the Steelers in 1940. | ![]() |
Bill Cowher became head coach of the Steelers in 1992. Cowher led Pittsburgh to three straight division titles from 1994 to 1996. They made the Super Bowl in 1996 but lost to the Dallas Cowboys. |
