| The Pittsburgh Alleghenies were founded on 1882. They were known as the Pirates from 1891 to present day. The Pirates are in the central division of the National League. | ![]() |
In 1960 the Pirates ended their 35 year drought and beat the Yankees in the World Series. Bill Mazersoki hit the series ending home run. The Pirates next rising star was Roberto Clemente. He won four batting titles and several gold gloves in the 1960's. In 1966 he was voted NL MVP hitting 29 homeruns, 119 RBI's, a batting average of .317 with 22 hits. |

| The first great Pirate of the 20th century was Honus Wagner. The Hall of Fame shortstop was the best in the National League for several years. |

The other Pirate star of the 1960's was Willie Stargell. He arrived in 1963 and played 21 seasons with the Pirates. He finished with 475 homeruns and more than 1,500 runs batted in. |

| In 1909 the Pirates defeated Ty Cobb and his Tigers in the World Series for the first time. The Pirates have won 5 National Championships. They were in 1909,1925,1960,1971,and 1979. But in recent years they haven't made the playoffs since 1992. |

The 1970's were the most successful decade in team history. Six times the team finished first, three times second, and once third. In 1971 and 1979 the Pirates advanced to the World Series, defeating the Orioles on both occasions. |
