The old saying is that diamonds are a girl's best friend.  There was even a song written that says it.  Jewelry was worn by men and women alike for centuries before diamond rings were a symbol of an engagement between two people.  The ancient Egyptians used gold for their jewelry and decorations.  Native Americans used turquoise and buffalo hide to decorate their clothing, homes and themselves.  They would also trade animal skins for glass beads.  Nowadays we use gold, silver, and nickel to make our jewelry.  We also use several different kinds of precious and semi-precious stones like diamonds, rubies, emeralds, pearls, and sapphires.  There are bracelets, necklaces, rings and many other different types of jewelry.
