What beavers eat

About the beaver

The beavers make a dam and a shelter called a lodge. They make it from the branches and trunks of the aspen trees.

The beaver chooses the trees closest to the stream. It stands on its hind legs and grabs the tree with its two front legs. It turns its head sideways and begins tearing at the tree.

The beaver works its way around the trunk of the tree until it is almost chewed threw. After the tree has fallen, the beaver will chew off the branches. Then it drags it all to the water.

Now the beaver begins building the dam. The beaver has already packed the bottom of the stream with mud and rocks. Then they pack the branches and tree trunks into the mud.

Now that the dam is built and the stream is blocked off.

During the fall, the beavers prepare for the long cold winter. In the winter the beavers live in lodges. Some of them are built into the banks of a river. Others are built in the middle of the pond. The lodges are built the same as the dam. The branches are packed into the mud and rocks. It is made into a domed island that rises above the water.
