How beavers make their homes

What beavers eat

Beavers are some of natures best architects and engineers. Some people appreciate beavers beavers, because the dams they build create habitats for other creatures. Sometimes a dam can stop a bank from washing away or saves a stream that's about to dry up. On the other hand, some people think beavers are destructive, because they cut down too many trees.

Beavers are rodents. They are related to squirrels and mice. Beavers have small heads, small eyes and small ears. Adult beavers grow to be about 4 1/2 feet in length and weigh between 40 and 60 pounds.

Beavers can be found in almost most of Canada. In the wild they can live from 7 to 10 years old.

A beavers fur is like a waterproof jacket. On the top there is long silky "gaurd"hairs that protect the dense and woolly fur underneath. The beaver has an oil gland near the base of the tail that it uses to keep their fur smooth and as a water repellent to keep themselves dry.
