The Coke Bottle

Where did they get those curves? In 1913 Coca-Cola sponsored a competition for glass bottlers to design a bottle for Coke. As the Root glass company prepared to find a unique design, a worker was sent out to find information. Instead of bringing back pictures of the coca or the kola bean he brought a picture of the cocoa bean! This mistake now gives us the bulbous design of the Coke bottle we have today.

Unfortunately the exaggerated curves of the root glass company never made it to the shelves. |
The Coca-Cola company decided on a more streamline design shown here. |

Even though the times have changed and we now use the plastic Coke bottles those bottles still have the traditional curvy shape.

The Six-Pack
|
The aluminum carton, produced by J.L. Clark manufacturing, held six bottles. They were not first though. In 1922 Harrison Jones envisioned a six pack carton, shown below.

The 'Designed for Hospitality' ad debuted in 1949. The ads encouraged Coca-Cola buyers to grab a six-pack for parties.
