Mariah Carey was born March 27, 1970 in Long Island, New York.  She was named after the song "They Call the Wind Mariah" from the movie "Paint Your Wagon".  Her music career began in 1990, when she was only 20 years old.  Mariah's self-titled debut album was released in 1990.

Mariah posses a voice range spanning 7 octaves.  Her highest octave is two octaves higher than a normal soprano.  Her debut album sparked four #1 singles and led to Grammys for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocalist.  Her nest album, Emotions, scored her her fifth #1 single, which was the title track.

She became the first muisician to have their first five singles all hit the top of the Billboard charts.  Her next album from MTV's Unplugged put her back on the top.  Mariah's next release, "Music Box", in 1993, was her biggest hit.  Mariah was one of the most played musicians on the radio in 1993 and 1994.  Her biggest hit ever, "Fantasy", was on her 1995 CD "DayDream".

Mariah's duet with BoyzIIMen, "One Sweet Day", stayed on the top of the charts for 16 straight weeks.  Her success continued until the release of her movie, "Glitter" and album "Glitter", in 2001.  During this time, Mariah suffered an emotional and mental breakdown.  After an appearance on MTV's TRL, she checked herself into a mental facility and announced that she was taking a break from music.  Mariah then realeased her newest album, Charmbracelet, in 2002.  Though it did not have any #1 hits, it still did fairly well.
