Top Five Goalies of the Past

Grant Fuhr played from June 10th, 1981 to September 6th, 2000 and was recently inducted into the hockey hall of fame.  He played for the Edmonton Oilers, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Buffalo Sabers, the Los Angeles Kings, the St. Louis Blues, and the Calgary Flames.  His average salary was $2,000,000.  He won five Stanley Cups in his career.
Ken Dryden was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on August 7, 1947.  He was the heart of the Montreal Canadiens.  He won 6 Stanley Cups in 8 seasons with the Canadiens.  He was inducted to  the Hall of fame in 1983.  He recorded a 2.24 goals-against average in 397 NHL games.  He was one of the bigger goalies of the NHL, being 6'4'' and weighing 210 pounds.  To the bottom is the mask he is wearing in the picture at the right.

Terry Sawchuk played from 1949 to 1970 with the Detroit Red Wings, the Boston Bruins, the Toronto Maple Leafs, the Los Angeles Kings, and the New York Rangers.  He was born on December 28, 1929 and died on May 31, 1970. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1971.  He won five Stanley Cups with the Red Wings and holds the record for most shutouts (all time) with 103 over 21 seasons.  He won 3 Vezina trophies over his career. 
Jacques Plante was the first goalie to popularize wearing the mask.  He was born on January 17, 1929 in Mont Carmel, Quebec, and died in Sierre, Switzerland on February 27, 1986.  He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1978.  He won 449 regular season games, and six Stanley Cups.  Plante had an outstanding 2.34 goals-against average in 837 games and recorded 82 shutouts.  He played for many teams but is commonly known playing for the Canadiens.  When he was 15 he played goal for a factory team where they didn't get paid and cut a deal with the coach to get paid 50 cents each game if he didn't tell any of the other players. 
Tony Esposito, a five-time All-Star with Chicago played 873 games in over 15 seasons.  He won or shared Vezina Trophy three times, including rookie year.  He was born in Sault Ste. Marie,  Ontario, on April 23, 1944.  He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1988, and also that year he became the General Manager of the Pittsburgh Penguins, but was replaced the next year.  On December 5, 1968, Tony made his first National Hockey League appearance (for Montreal) against the Boston Bruins. The game ended in a 2-2 tie, and his older brother Phil Esposito had both goals for the Bruins.
