Dancers must have practice clothing as well as any other sport. Leotards are mandatory for most dance schools. The reason dancers wear leotards rather than dance pants and a t-shirt is so the teacher can se the lines of the dancer. An example may be where the leg is postioned or how the foot is pointed. Also with leotards the teacher can see the muscles being used in the legs, stomach, back, and arms to make sure the student is doing a movement correctly.

| Tights are yet another part of a dancers "uniform". Tights, like leotards, help the teacher to see the lines of the dancer and the muscles being used. Most studios recommend wearing pink tights for practice rather then tan or black, only for the reason of being able to see the muscles easier. Dancers use different tights for performances then for practice. Many tights made for performances have seams down the back of the legs to make it look as if the leg is longer and straighter. | ![]() |

There are many different kinds of shoes for dancing. There are ballet shoes, jazz shoes, pointe shoes, lyrical shoes, tap shoes, character shoes and many more. Of course out of those basic shoes there are different makers which make the basic shoe but in their own specific way.
|
For the ballet shoe, you could choose leather or a fabric shoe. For tap shoes you could buy with a buckle or laced, rounded top or pointed, boot or shoe. As for jazz, their are boots, slip-on shoes, or laced shoes. Also you can pick from black, to white, to tan. For pointe shoes, all are very similar. The only difference is if the top is block or not, if you need a narrow or wide, and the color is different. |

Dancers costumes can be very elaborate or very traditional. In professional ballet companies and even ametuer studios costumes can be very expensive. Most studios keep their prices low because they realize you don't wear the acually costume a lot. Costumes are full of color and set the mood for the dance. Also costumes might be picked for which one fits you best and makes you look sharper.
| Costumes come in all colors, and sizes. Some costumes can come across your arm, show your stomach, show your legs, be tight, be loose, or even flowy. Most costumes for ballet have a tutu. The tutu can either be long or short, thick or very thin. In jazz classes and hip hop the costumes are usually pants and a glittery top or a nice skirt and top. |

Dancers wear many accessories to compliment their costumes. Some accessories could be hair peices, make-up, face paint, earrings, sparkles, etc. Some dancers also use props during their performance.
| Some dancers also use legwarmers or a warm-up suit while streching for class. Leg warmers warm the muscles in the legs so the muscles can stretch easier. Warm-up pants or shirts keep the body warm until it has moved enough to feel comfortable. |
