Countries all over the world felt the effects of World War 2.  But it was not just the soldiers who were troubled.  Civilians, for the first time in world history, were targeted by all forces in the War.  Americans, Germans, British, Japanese, and Chinese people were all affected.  (Just to name a few.)
When America entered the War, the men went overseas, leaving the women hear to carry on their duties.  For the first time ever, women worked in the factories and they supplied the soldiers across the world.
Japanese Americans, because of Pearl Harbor and the war in the Pacific, were relocated and were treated as if they were spies until the war was over.  Although they were just innocent foreigners trying to make a living, the American public did not see it that way, and they were put away.
The Jews of Europe, of course, get the most recognition as being harshly treated by the Nazis.  Millions of Jews were gassed, shot, trampled on and worked to death for absolutely no reason whatsoever.  While they were sent to the concentration camps, their homes were looted, pillaged, and burned.
The Chinese, while under attack from Japan before the US entered the War, suffered horrific casualties.  Over 350,000 Chinese died, both soldiers and civilians.  The Japanese were ruthless in their conquests and destroyed historic landmarks and buildings and burned everything they could not use.
The British, while subject to the German blitz, suffered high casualties, but they mostly lost their buildings and cities.  German bombers ruthlessly attacked them every night.  People had to live in the sewers for months.
German civilians suffered also.  When the Americans and the Russians were closing in on Berlin, everyone was forced to fight.  Boys were taught to use antitank weapons.  Anyone who resisted was publicly executed.  Women who resisted were humiliated in public.  Also, the Russian army would kill even innocent civilians in their anger.  It was a terrible time to be a German.
World War 2 was the first war in history that soldiers used a mass- bombing technique.  In previous wars, killing a civilian was appalling and infuriating.  Bombing was only done on specific military targets.  But the times would change, and all countries began to simply choose a city to bomb, flew out, dropped all of your bombs on the city, and headed back.
All in all, World War Two was not a good time to live through, whether you were a soldier, a civilian, male, female, German, British, or anything else.  The entire world welcomed the end of it all with open arms, and the people could breathe a sigh of relief.
