HISTORY

Jazz dance originated in black social dances of the 19th century.  The social dances were the cakewalk and the turkey trot. Some dances such as the jitter bug and the twist, have influenced  today's jazz dances. In the 50'sand 60's a style came that needed elements of ballet, modern, and tap.

Jazz is a popular dance that covers in range from Luigi, lyrical, hip-hop, and video dance styles.  This dance style emphasizes body line and a flexible torso.  It also requires fast foot work.  Jazz dancing concentrates on floor orientated steps, high leaps, and kicks.

When practicing jazz dance, or attending class, you should wear a leotard, or stretchy pants, and a tank top.  The best shoes to wear are split-sole jazz shoes.
