Snakes, like lizards, are found in all continents except Antartica. But none of them live in the cold regions. Snakes have reached isolated islands, but not islands like Ireland. |
| Snakes come in many different
types. Two-thirds of them belong to the Colubridae family. Snakes like
European grass snakes, or North American Garters. Most of this family is
harmless to humans, few have poison.
Other types of snakes are the primitive pythons and boas, poisonous cobras and sea-snakes, and vipers and rattlesnakes. |

There are 6 types of odd families that are small burrowing snakes. There are 338 known species. Eleven species of these pipesnakes live in a tropical place like South America and Asia. They are each less than three feet long and burrow in deep soil. Pipesnakes feed on other snakes and eels. To fool their enemies, snakes hide their head and wave their tail which is red underneath. |
| Thread snakes number 78 species with some of the smallest snakes less than 20cm in length and they are no thicker than a matchstick. Thread snakes live in tropical rain forests and feed on ants and termites. | ![]() |

Snakes have a very important
diet. They eat other animals, depending on size. They eat mammals, birds,
and other reptiles. Tasty, huh?
Snakes depend on their tongue for telling where their are and what it's like. The tongue is very important.
