Lizards are awesome animals. They are found on all continents except Antartica. Some lizards are found in the tropics, some in cooler climates. There are a total of 16 families of Lizards. |
| A Typical Lizard is normally very small. About 4 to 8in. long, which is half the lentgth of its tail. In the back of its head there are small ear openings. It uses it's tongue to "taste" the surroundings. So it uses its tongue for all senses. A Lizard is a hunter and normally just hunts small animals, mainly insects. And lizard reproduce by laying eggs. | ![]() |

Some lizards live above ground and some under. Lizards above ground live in places like Sri Lanka(prehensile-tail). Then there are the Flying Dragons of Asia. Some lizards climb trees, using their tail for support. Flying dragons fly from tree to tree gliding on "wings" of skin. They have extra long ribs, which stick out with extra skin. |
| Underground lizards have either
small or no legs. Their eyesight isn't that sharp because they small or
eyes under the skin. To protect their eyes, they have transparent
spectacles, not eyelids.
There are also water dragons who are excellent swimmers and the Austrailian frilled lizard who are quick runners. |

| Lizards blend in with their surroundings because of their colors. They use it to protect themselves from predators. Some don't need to hide because they are to bony and hard to swallow. And the sungazer lashes a spiny tail at predators. Armadillo girdle tails wedge themselves in a crevise for protection. When it come to protection, lizards know what to do. | ![]() |
