Believe it or not hockey is a similar sport to what the Greeks, Persians, Romans, and Egyptians. British soldiers started playing hockey in the mid 1850's. The game first came to America in 1904. The first league was started in 1926, and consisted of 10 teams. Due to World War II the league was shortened to 6 teams. They were the Montreal Canadians, Toronto Maple Leafs, Boston Bruins, New York Rangers, Chicago Black Hawks, and Detroit Red Wings. The league has now expanded to 30 teams.
