The defenders job is to keep the other team from scoring.  They usually always have to stay on their marks, unless they have the ball and run with it, or if they make a run for the ball.  Defenders usually try to pull the other team off sides.  Off sides is when the other team is behind the last defender, when the ball is not in front of them.

When the ball is on the other side on the field, the defender opposite to the ball usually moves toward the ball, but not on the same side of the ball.  They don't move towards the ball when their defender is not guarded by anyone.

The positions of defending is left/right defense and there is a sweeper.  The left and right defense usually guards the forwards on the other team.  The sweeper usually doesn't have a mark.  They are all located in front of the goalie and behind the midfielders.  Sometimes there is a right\left defense, but when you get older you usually don't have those defenders back there because they are faster and they can get around the field faster than before.
