Helmets are probably the most important part of your equipment.  They protect your head from concussions and can protect you neck and throat from being injured.

Shoulder pads protect your shoulders, upper arms, and your chest.  Also they can protect your spine from injury.

Rib pads protect your ribs from being damaged.  They aren't required in some youth leagues, but they are recommended to wear if it is a contact league.

Elbow pads protect your elbow and forearm.  They can protect you from blows from another players stick and the ball.

Gloves protect your hands and wrists.  They also can protect you from another players stick or from the ball.  Also they keep your fingers from being hurt or broken while you can still handle your stick.

Instead of shoulder pads and elbow pads goalies wear chest protectors.  They protect their chest, stomach, and shoulders from the speeding balls being shot at them.

Goalies also need throat protectors.  They hang from the goalies helmet to keep the throat from being hit with the ball.

Every player must have a stick.  Attack and Mid field have a short shafted stick with a normal head.  Defensive players have a long shafted stick with a normal head.  Goalies have a short shaft and a wide fish net like head.
