The Pittsburgh Pirates franchise began in the 1880's. They had trouble winning games in their first years as a franchise. The Pirates signed one of the league's best players, short-stop Louis Bierbauer, from the Philadelphia Athletics. The Athletics said "You've stolen one of our best players. You're no better than Pirates!" So the nickname "Pirates" stuck with them. | |

The Pirates for the next couple of decades kept building and
building. They got players like Ray Kremer, Ralph Kiner, Roberto
Clemente, and many more. but the Pirates would always come up a
little short.
Finally in 1960, the Pirates won their first World Series against the New York Yankees, 4 games to 3. Then they won their second in 1971 against the Baltimore Orioles. Now the Pirates are still trying to make the playoffs and they have a new stadium to play at, PNC Park. |
