The very first snowboard was invented by Sherman Poppen.  Poppen would always watch his daughter stand up on her sled and try to ride down hills on it.  So that gave him an idea to put two skis together with a dowel.  Poppen's daughter fell in love with it and his wife described it as a snurfboard.

The snowboard went through at least half a dozen changes before it reached the way it is today.  For awhile they were using fin attachments for the base, for a better balance.  Then they had adjustable foot straps.  Today the boards are strong, and they're just a thin layer of wood and fiberglass.

Today all different types of people are into snowboarding, but it was not always like that.  It used to be mainly skateboarders and surfers that were interested in snowboarding.  Because of the new culture, and mountains, there are new basic skills that make it easier for anyone to do.  Today snowboarders are slowly outnumbering skiers.  If you go to a resort today you will see many more snowboarders than skiers or ski boarders.  It comes easy to most people after just a few lessons.

Over time people have realized that the four basic steps to snowboarding are, speeding fearlessly down Alpine slopes, gracefully turning edges with your board in a deep putter of snow, learning your way over the turns, and learning how to get right back up after you fall.
