1898 was the year the Monongahela street railway company leased a rustic picnic grove known as "Kenny's Grove". It was 141 acres of land, and it was leased by Anthony Kenny.

The original tract of ground was purchased in 1818, by Charles K. Kenny, Anthony's grandfather. It was bought for five pounds, ten shillings, six pence, and a barrel of whiskey. Together, him and his son Thomas became rich mining coal from the land. In the 1860s it became a popular local picnic spot (Kenny's Grove). Kenny permitted people to use the land free of charge.

This brings me back to 1898 when the trolley park was being built. By offering rides, games, band concerts, food and a picnic grove, the trolley company got workers and their families to use the trolleys in the evening and on weekends. The first major structures in Kennywood were all open air buildings: the dance pavilion, the casino, and the Merry-go-round.
