It is hard to say who actually invented the first snowboard. But there were some people that came close.

One of these men were M.J. "Jack" Burchett. He cut out a plank of plywood in 1929 and tried to secure his feet with some clothesline and horse reins.

There is question about who invented the "snurfer", or as we know it today, the snowboard. It was either Sherman Poppen, a chemical gases engineer in Muskegon, invented it for his daughter in 1965.

He bounded two skis together and put a rope at the nose, so the rider could hold it and be more stable. Or the inventor of the snowboard as we know it today was Jake Burton Carpenter.

He wanted to bring the snowboard, or snurfer, to the world. He added rubber bands on them for bindings and made them sleek and shapely. Carpenter is now the owner of one of the top snowboarding companys in the world, its called Burton Snowboards.

Vermont was home to the first place to have an official snowboarding compotition. This compotition was called the National Races at Suicidr Six in Pomfret, Vt..

Then came the U.S. open, which was held at Magic Mountain, Vt. The U.S. open have become one of the most popular snowboarding compitions in the world.

Then in the 1980's the first snowboard park was opened, it was at Sononberg Ski Hill in Barnard, Vt. The owner gave the snowboarders one hill witha few jumps. This was a big move for snowboarders because not many skiers let snowboarders ride on their hills.
