Human beings have been swimming for thousands of years. One of the earliest  representations of swimming was in ancient Egypt. Pharaoh Rames II would have his soldiers pursue his enemies by swimming across the Orontones River between Egypt and Asia Minor. During 2500 B C., the first Egyptian hieroglyphics depicting swimming were made.

Swimming was really popular for warriors in Greece in the past. They would do this to exercise and keep fit for battles to fight in. Later in the Middle Ages, in the 14th century, knights would master swimming by swimming in their armor. After that, and near the beginning of  the 19th century, sea swimming was popularized by George III. Amateur swimming clubs started to open after that. Then, in 1875, Mathew web of Great Britain became the first person to swim across the English Channel.

Swimming then became a really popular sport and soon it made its way to the Olympics. In 1896, swimming became one of the sports at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens, Greece. Then many other people started to do swimming.
