Refs are in the games to enforce the laws of the game and keep the game in order.  

 

These are the regulations of the field.  Also in the above picture when a ref calls a foul he will blow his whistle and will signal which direction the kick will be taken.  In the picture at the right a ref is showing a substitute.

In soccer when you commit a dangerous foul you can be awarded a card.  If is is dangerous but non-harmful you could receive a yellow card.  If you try to hurt someone or recklessly go after someone you could receive a red card.  A yellow card is a warning.  A red card means you are ejected from this game and the next.  Also two yellows equals a red.
