Cheerleading originated from ancient Greece in 776 B.C. When cheerleading started only men were cheerleaders and they were called "Yell Captains". During World War II the male cheerleaders were drafted for military services, and so it became a mostly female sport. Women have been dominating the sport ever since.
In 1898 the United States organized to have cheerleading at the University of Minnesota. John Campbell, a medical student, wanted to try the idea of having the crowds support to lead their team to victory. His idea worked! More people came to the football games, and it made it more fun for the fans and the athletes.

As you can see cheerleading has come along way since 776 B.C. Cheerleading has become more peppy and colorful.
