The Cairn Terrier originated over 200 years ago in the highlands of Scotland and the island of skye. The origin is so vague that so far no one has discovered the breed's exact origin. The Cairn was also used to hunt foxes and badgers in Scotland.

When they would hunt the rodents, they were to be found in rocky crevices, or Cairns so came the name of the Cairn. Before being called the Cairn terrier their name was they Prick Eared sky Terriers or short haired sky terriers.
Cairn terriers love people. They are also born diggers. The Cairn  Terrier is a double coated breed. And has a woolly thick under coat. They have a rough outer coat.

It is very difficult to determine the color in a puppy. An example of this is when a silver gray is turned into a golden brown.

The Cairn Terrier's expression is like nothing else in the world. The eyes should be dark and piercing, fox like in expression. A mixture of cunningness, kindness, and fierceness. The Cairn is so cunning that he resembles the fox in many ways. Not highly strung, intelligent, and full of spirit. They are protective of the family and not barkers but will warn you of a prowler.

You will not find a Cairn having the beauty and colors of other dogs, but the beauty of this dog come from it's heart. He has the desire to serve others and not himself. The Cairn love a good romp and the outdoors. Always ready for a swim, a hike, or a fishing trip. But they also like to be calm and laid back and to be dressed up in a doll's clothes by a little girl.
They are 14-15 pounds at full maturity. They can be any other color except white. They are happy and assertive but not aggressive.

The Cairn needs to be brushed and groomed to avoid knots and mats. Because they are a long haired breed the Cairn needs to be brushed 3-4 times a week. This will make them shinier and more confident in themselves.
