A Well Maintained and Clean Cage

A clean cage is an important part of disease prevention for a rabbit.

Daily: Aerate the straw bedding and wash the food bowls with hot water. The water bottle must be scrubbed twice weekly. Get spare bottles and sipper tubes, and soak them overnight in water with a few drops of bleach. Rinse thoroughly.

Weekly: Replace the entire bedding. Straw and shavings can be composted. Cat litter goes into the trash. The litter pan must be washed with hot water, and the scale is best removed with the addition of citric acid from the pet store.

Monthly: Wash the top grate thoroughly with hot water.

Checklist for Equipment to Clean Cages

1. Indoor cage with a floor space that fits the size and number of animals. The top is made of metal, and the bedding pan is high enough to keep the litter inside the cage.

2. Bedding: straw or shavings.

3. Litter box that contains litter.
