Here are some steps on how to dribble a basketball:

Spread your fingers wide.  the wider you spread your fingers, the more control over the ball you have.  Make sure to not slam the ball with your palm.

Keep your elbows and wrists loose.

Stay low to the ground, and bend your knees.  Staying low makes it easier to move.  You will have better control of the ball.

Make sure that you keep your body between you and your opponent.

Keep your head up while dribbling, so you can see the whole court.

As you get more advanced in your dribbling, try the crossover, rocket step, through the legs, and even behind your back.  These dribbling moves may be hard, but take your time and you will achieve.

Crossover-  Is a change in hands while dribbling, and then you make a shot.  Then, you turn your body slightly toward the defender.  When you see an opening switch your hands.

Rocket Step- A move that fakes the defender, in which he thinks you are going to move towards him, but you don't.  Before you start to dribble , hold the ball with two hands.  Away from the defense plant one foot on the floor (usually closest) to the defender.  Then, turn your other foot at him.  Keep your pivot foot planted.  Thrust your other foot toward him in a fake.  Bring the  same leg across your body.  Then, dribble in the other direction.

Dribbling is a very important key in basketball.  When you are at your house just watching TV, throw up a ball and try catching it. This will get you to have a good feel for the ball.

You may know that Michael Jordan did not make his school, then how did he get into the NBA?  The answer is dedication.  He started practicing basketball harder than ever. Michael got so strong in basketball that in two years all-American teams were looking at him.  Most colleges were offering him scholarships.
