Offense is when you have
the ball and the chance to score points. On offense, you will normally
have two guards, two forwards, and one center. Sometimes you will have a
point guard and a shooting guard instead of two regular guards.
The guards are the smalllest and quickest players on the team. They play furthest from the basket. They have to be good dribblers and passers. A point guard has to have major ball-handling skills. The other guard is th shooting guard. The shooting guard is normally the best shooter on the team. The forwards are taller and stronger than the guards. They play in the area from the base line to the free throw line. They have to be good rebounders and be able to maneuver for shots close to the basket. The center is the tallest player on the team. They are the best rebounders. If the center is really good, they can dominate the game. |

To
play offense, you need to make a lot of passes, and be in constant motion.
Picks and screens help to set up good shooting opportunites. Before you
can shoot, you have to get a good shooting opportunities by passing and
moving the ball.
The four main types of passes are the chest pass, bounce pass, overhead pass, and baseball pass. The chest pass is used the most because it is the most effective because it is thrown with the force of two hands. To make a good chest pass, bring the ball to your chest with twoo hands. Step towards the person you are throwing to with your lead foot and push the ball to your teammate. Snap your wrists as you let go of the ball. Your hands should point outward on the follow through. A bounce pass is used a lot also. Bring the ball to your chest , and bouce it to your teammate. The ball should hit the ground about two-thirds of the way to your teammate. Make sure you step towards your target and use both hands. An overhead pass is used often when a defender has you trapped in a corner. This is especially useful for taller players. The ball should be held firmly between both hands over your head with your fingers spread. Your elbows should be bent, and your feet should be staggered so that your weight shifts from your back foot to your front foot as you release the ball. You should release the ball in front of your head, and your wrists and fingers should snap forward toward your target. Follow through with your arms extended - like a chest pass, only higher. A baseball pass is thrown just like a baseball is thrown. Stagger your feet, and support the ball primarily in one hand. Step into your pass, and put an arc on the ball so it will go farther and be easier to catch. There are more than four passes, but those arthe main ones. You can get very creative and make up your own passes. Make sure that you don't telegraph your passes, and don't force the pass. Also, pass away from the defense, and make your passes crisp. Always be careful when you pass the ball. |

| A very important part
of offense is shooting. First, you need to position your hand correctly.
Place your dominate hand at an angle underneath the ball, centered with
your fingers spread apart. Your fingertips should be on the ball, not your
palm. Your arm should be in a L-shape underneath the ball. Do not let it
angle out from underneath the ball. Your other hand is your "guide
hand". It balances and guides tha ball. You only shoot with your
dominate hand. Your guide hand should be lined up on the side of the ball.
Second, you need to use your legs when shoting. You need to balance
your weight, distribute it equally on the balls of your feet. Bend your
knees , and stagger your feet about shoulder width apart. Make sure your
shoulders are squared with the basket when you shoot. Bend your knees and
spring up as you shoot. This gives you added power and better accuracy.
The two basic shots are the layup and the jumpshot. The layup is perhaps the easiest and most important shot in basketball. You need to first pick which side you are going to drive to. Plant your weakside foot then lift your other hand and foot. You want to aim high on the backboard, don't shoot too close to the basket, and always go straight up. Also, keep your eyes on the backboard and the hoop, and don't be afraid to be strong. The jump shot is considered the most popular shot in basketball. It is taken after you pick up your dribble. As soon as you pick up your dribble, square yourself with the basket and shoot while you are at the peak of your jump. Free throws are taken after a foul is committed, while someone was shooting. A free throw is the only uncontested shot in a basketball game. You shoot this shot from the free throw line. Offense is a very important part of
the game of basketball. There are many other important parts of the
game... so KEEP READING! |
