Sacramento is the capital of California (building shown at the left) which is located inland, east of San Francisco.  Sacramento being the capital you would expect to see huge sleek glass buildings at the center of a metropolis.  There are buildings like this of course downtown but actually Sacramento is mostly comprised of many small communities.

Modern Sacramento is a political hub of the world's 8th largest economy.  It is also known as the 2nd "silicon valley."  Sacramento also has many cultural attractions such as Crocker Art museum, its famous Sacramento train museum, one of the largest collections of trains in the world (pictured below.)  Sacramento known for its "small town life" has many little quaint shops in its towns where you can find anything from homemade candy to crafts.
In 1839, John Sutter and his fellow Swiss explorers and built a fort (Sutters Fort) by the streams.  When the first discovery of gold was made the small settlements grew rapidly.  Many people were not so lucky to strike it rich in Sacramento but instead decided to make a profit from agriculture and founded towns near the gold rush streams.  By 1849 news of gold in Northern California reached San Francisco and by then the entire nation gad a horrible case of gold fever.
