Created and played by Native Americans, Lacrosse has become the fastest game on
two feet. Even though in-depth reports about lacrosse played by Indians didn't
surface until the nineteenth century, the sport has been around since the 1600s.
The Indians used a "crosse" for playing a form of lacrosse called
Baggataway. But, the games would
sometimes break out into bloody battles and eventually gambling on Baggataway
games almost became Native American tradition. Then, when settlers came and
watched the game, they named it "la crosse" or "game of the
stick" because the stick used to play reminded the French settlers of a
bishops staff. You can see how the standard stick of today differs from the
stick used by the Native Americans.
