The Defensemen should always, whenever possible, to clear the ball out of the zone and get it downfield to their teammates.
If a Defenseman scoops up the ball and has a clear path down the field, he can do one of two things. He can either pass the ball to a teammate who would run it down field or could run it down the field himself. But a Defenseman can only run it down field if there is a Midfielder back to take his place or at least has to stay on that side of the field. If a Defenseman takes the ball down the field without a "Middie Back", then it is off-sides and the other team gets the ball.
The Goalie doesn't have to stay in his crease but another player cannot enter into the crease. If an Attack or Midfield player enters the crease on a shot, the goal is not counted and the other team gets the ball. Also, if the Goalie leaves the crease and is clearing the ball, an opposing player cannot hit his stick or it is interference.
The Goalie should always be watching the ball and do his best to avoid being screened by another player.
The Goalie is the player on the field that lets his teammates know what is going on. For instance, the Goalie may yell "Top Right" to let his players know where the ball is.
The Goalie will always stand his ground for a shot and will usually try and figure out a team's strategy and where they are shooting early on in the game.
The Defenseman will always try and pick out the other team's "shooter" and will swarm to him whenever that player gets the ball.
The Defensemen should always try and get the ball then get it to a teammate to take down field. The Defensemen will adapt to a team's strategy and, for example, might "shadow" a team's main player or set up a different way to take away a team's offensive plays.
